First Angle Projection and Third Angle Projection

What is the difference between First Angle and Third Angle Projection in Drawings?

The orthographic projection is a representation of a three-dimensional object in two dimensions. This is a form of a parallel projection as all projection lines are orthogonal to the projection plane and as a result, every plane looks like an affine transformation of the viewing surface. The lens provides an orthographic projection is called a telecentric lens. There are two types of drawings in orthographic namely First Angle and Third Angle. The difference between them is the front and side view. The first angle projection is widely used in Europe and the Third angle projection is used in the USA.

The engineer should know to read engineering drawings and it is most essential to know the difference between first angle projection and second angle projection. There is 2D drawings used to show the 3D object in the orthographic projection which have six different orthographic views like Top, Bottom, Right, Left, Front, and Back view are known as six principle views. From these six views the front, right side, and top view widely use views.

Many engineers want to know how to get an orthographic view from a 3D object. As we discuss above there are mainly two projection techniques used the First angle projection and third angle projection. Both have the same functions but there is a difference in getting results.

Projection Method

First, divide the plane into four quadrants. For the first angle projection, the object is placed in the first quadrant and for the third angle projection, it is placed in the third quadrant.

Where to place an Object?

For first angle projection, the object is placed between the plane of projection and observer and for the third angle projection, it is placed between object and observer.

State of the Projection Plane

The plane of the projection is being solid in the first angle of projection and it is transparent in the third angle projection.

View Order
