What is Engineering Mechanics?

Engineering Mechanics is a branch of applied science and it works with the laws and principles of mechanics. We can see the objects and experiences forces and due to those forces experienced by the body, they undergo motion. The study of the object is either in motion or at rest because the forces acting on them are under mechanics.

Why Engineering Mechanics is important?

There are lots of machines and structures that are invented and for the planning and design of these machines and structures, engineering mechanics is very important. For performing the job efficiently and precisely the study of engineering mechanics is very important for mechanical engineers. The mechanics are very important for every branch of engineering to study. Without mechanics, the design is not possible. Mechanics is present everywhere where forces exist. Engineering mechanics is divided into two types

  1. Statics
  2. Dynamics

Statics

This is the branch of mechanics that deals with forces and their effects on the bodies which are at rest. Like if there is a block and resting on the ground and if we studying the forces and effect on that block, we are dealing with the statics branch of mechanics. The civil engineer works with statics design in bridges, buildings, roads, etc which cannot move. In Civil engineering, if something moves, it gets failed.

 Dynamics

Dynamics is a branch of mechanics that deals with forces and their effects on bodies that are in motion. The mechanical engineers use dynamics more as it uses in design mechanism, machines, and objects with having moving parts. With that, they can create moving objects like automobiles, airplanes, etc.

For example study of the motion of a car running on the road, a study of the motion of thrown object above ground.

Dynamics are further divided into two types:

  1. Kinetic
  2. Kinematics

Kinetics

It works with bodies in motion because of applied forces. In simple words, it is the branch that deals with bodies in motion consider the cause of motion.

Kinematics

This deals with bodies in motion without considering the forces causing the motion. It is used to describe the motion of points, bodies, and system of objects without taking the mass of each or forces which caused-motion.

Kinematics is used in astrophysics to describe the motion of celestial bodies. It is used in mechanical engineering for robotics and biomechanics. It is describing the motion of systems that are composed of joined parts like engine, a robotic arm or a human skeleton.
